Do you photograph...everything?
Absolutely and I do so with pride and joy. Part of the reason my images resonate the way they do, is I do not shy from any form of intensity in the birth space. Sometimes that involves nudity and close ups of the vagina, sometimes it doesn't.
That does not mean that I SHARE all of those images though. All the images I ever share are at the explicit consent of the subjects, and that consent is revokable at any time.
What is a birthkeeper? Does that replace my hiring a doula?
A Birthkeeper is someone who holds sacred knowledge of birth, the physiological process and how to support someone through that. I strive to use the knowledge I possess to ensure that I am a informed part of your birth team who understands, respects and upholds your wants + needs in the birth space with respects to how I document it all. Sometimes this can look like stepping totally out of the room, sometimes it looks like putting the camera down and holding your hand.
As my primary focus in supporting you is to document your journey, I do not consider myself a replacement for a Doula at your birth. If you are in need of Doula services, please get in touch and I would be happy to talk about that with you.
When do you show up? what if you miss it?
We'll go over this in even more detail when we sit down and chat but the basics are I show up when things are in the Active Labor area. Generally this is one you start noticing a big change in your comfort level - the surges start getting more intense, more consistent and more frequent. Where as you might have been able to smile or talk through them before, this is often where that starts to change. For those receiving cervical checks its about the 6cm point that everything begins to shift.
It happens sort of like this - "Hey Sia, things are picking up, babe's on the way, see you soon." I hop in the car and start your way only to get another phone call 20 minutes later with a sweet babe crying in the background. Baby's wait for no one and thankfully we have a back up plan in place. In the event that you have a precipitous delivery and I miss the actual birth, I'll still show up ASAP to capture as many first moments as possible, and also offer a lifestyle newborn or postpartum self love session to create a full gallery of your story.
